Rewiring & New Electrical Installations

Renovating, extending or modernising an older house? Safe new wiring, extra sockets and circuits, neatly installed.

House rewiring in Crete: full and partial rewiring of village houses, apartments and villas

Old Cretan village houses, apartments from the seventies and eighties, and properties that have been extended bit by bit often have wiring that is undersized, unearthed or simply worn out. You notice it as sockets that feel warm, breakers that trip whenever the A/C runs, two sockets in a whole living room and extension leads everywhere. Behind the plaster there may be cables with brittle insulation and joins made without a junction box.

When you renovate, it is the ideal moment to bring the electrics up to a modern standard. I plan the installation with you, room by room: where you want sockets, lights, switches, the TV and the router, and which appliances need their own circuit. Then I install it neatly with the right cable sizes, proper earthing, bonding in bathrooms and around the pool, and a modern fuse box with RCD protection.

I am a Belgian-certified electrician, and because I am also a plumber and HVAC technician, I can coordinate the electrics with the water heater, A/C and heating in the same project. I live in Hersonissos and rewire houses in Heraklion, Malia, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the villages in between. Rewiring is planned work, so we choose dates that suit you and your builder.

What I install when I rewire a house

Full rewiring

A complete new installation for houses and apartments, from the fuse box to every socket, switch and light point.

Partial rewiring

Renewing only the circuits that need it, such as the kitchen, the bathroom or an old extension, while the rest stays in use.

Extra sockets and circuits

More sockets where you actually need them, USB sockets, and dedicated circuits for the kitchen, A/C and water heater.

Earthing and bonding

A proper earth connection and equipotential bonding in bathrooms and around pools, the basis of a safe installation.

Outdoor circuits

Weatherproof sockets and circuits for terraces, gardens, pumps, outdoor kitchens and outdoor lighting.

Data and TV cabling

Network, TV and satellite cables laid during the renovation, so Wi-Fi and TV work in every room without loose cables.

Full or partial rewiring: what fits your house?

Not every house needs a complete rewire. This is what I usually advise in the situations I see most.

SituationWhat I usually adviseWhy
Old village house, never updatedFull rewiring with a new fuse boxOld cables, often unearthed, and far too few circuits
Apartment from the seventies or eightiesFull or large partial rewiringCable sizes and earthing not made for today's appliances
Newer house with one problem areaPartial rewiring of that circuit or roomThe rest of the installation is sound
Kitchen or bathroom renovationRewire that room and its circuitsWalls are open anyway, and these rooms carry the heaviest loads
Extension or converted storeroomNew circuits from the fuse boxAvoids overloading existing circuits with extra rooms
Adding A/C, heat pump or EV chargerDedicated circuits and a board checkHeavy loads need their own protected supply

Signs your house needs rewiring

Wiring does not fail overnight, it ages slowly. These are the signs that tell me an installation has reached the end of its life:

  • Cables with cloth or brittle rubber insulation, or without an earth wire
  • Sockets with two holes only, or sockets that feel warm or show scorch marks
  • Breakers or fuses that trip often, especially when the A/C or oven is on
  • Extension leads and multi-plugs in almost every room
  • A house older than thirty or forty years that was never updated
  • Faults that keep coming back in different rooms after repairs

Planning a rewire during a renovation

The best time to rewire is when the walls are open anyway. I like to be involved early, before the tiler and the plasterer, so the cables are in the right place and nothing has to be broken out twice. Together we walk through the house with a plan: sockets at the right height next to the bed and the desk, switches where you enter a room, light points for the ceiling and the walls, and outlets for every appliance in the kitchen.

Then I cut the channels, lay the conduits and cables, install the boxes and connect everything to a new or upgraded fuse box. Where possible I reuse existing conduits to limit damage. I close the channels afterwards and leave the walls ready for plastering and painting, or I arrange that as part of the job.

I coordinate with your builder, tiler and kitchen fitter, and with myself for the plumbing and A/C, so you have one person who keeps the technical side together.

What a rewire includes

A rewire is more than new cables. A complete job covers the whole chain:

Inside the house

  • New cables of the right size in conduits
  • New sockets, switches and light points
  • Dedicated circuits for kitchen, A/C and water heater
  • Earthing and bonding in wet rooms

Board, outside and extras

  • A new fuse box with RCD protection
  • Weatherproof outdoor sockets and circuits
  • Data, TV and satellite cabling
  • Testing of every circuit and clear labels

When the work is finished I test every circuit, check the earthing and the RCDs, and walk you through the new installation.

While the walls are open: combine it with

A new lighting plan

A rewire is the moment to put light points exactly where you want them, inside and on the terrace. Adding them later always means extra channels.

  • Ceiling and wall light points planned per room
  • Dimmers and two-way switches
  • Terrace, garden and pool lighting
  • Energy-efficient LED fittings

Smart home preparation

With new wiring it is easy to prepare for smart switches, A/C control and remote monitoring. Very useful for owners who are often abroad.

  • Neutral wires in switch boxes
  • Network cabling to key points
  • Smart control of lights and A/C
  • Check your home from your phone

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Warning signs are old cloth or rubber-insulated cables, no earth wires, frequent faults, warm sockets, extension leads everywhere or a house older than thirty to forty years that was never updated. I can inspect the installation and tell you honestly whether a full or partial rewire is needed.

How much does it cost to rewire a house in Crete?

It depends on the size of the house, the number of circuits and points, and whether the walls are open for a renovation or have to be channelled. After a visit I give you a free quote with a fixed price before I start.

How long does a full rewire take?

A small apartment can be rewired in a few days. A larger house or villa takes longer, especially when it is combined with a renovation. I give you a realistic planning with the quote.

Does rewiring mean breaking all my walls?

Not always. Where possible I reuse existing conduits or choose routes that limit the damage. During a renovation it is easiest, because the walls are open anyway.

Can I stay in the house during rewiring?

For a partial rewire usually yes, because I keep the rest of the house powered. For a full rewire it is easier when the house is empty, for example between seasons or before you move in.

Can you work together with my builder?

Yes. I regularly coordinate with builders, tilers and kitchen fitters so the electrics are installed at the right moment, and I can do the plumbing and A/C preparation in the same project.

Do you repair the walls afterwards?

Yes. I close the channels and leave the walls ready for paint, or I include plastering and painting as part of the job.

Do you rewire village houses around Hersonissos and Agios Nikolaos?

Yes. I rewire old stone village houses, apartments and villas in Hersonissos, Malia, Heraklion, the villages of the Lasithi area, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda. Many are renovations for owners who live abroad, and I keep them updated with photos.
