CCTV & Alarm Systems

Peace of mind for your property in Crete, especially when you are not there: cameras and alarms you can check from anywhere.

Security cameras and alarm systems for homes, villas and holiday rentals in Crete

Holiday homes and villas in Crete often stand empty for long periods, sometimes the whole winter. A well-placed camera system and a good alarm let you check your property from your phone, receive an alert when a door opens and deter intruders before they try. For permanent residents, a video doorbell or a few outdoor cameras simply give peace of mind when you are out for the day or travelling.

I install wired and wireless CCTV systems and alarms, advise on the right camera positions and make sure everything works on your phone before I leave. As a Belgian-certified electrician I also take care of the part many installers skip: a proper power supply, protected cable runs that survive the Cretan sun and salt air, and a recorder placed where a burglar cannot simply take it away.

Cameras are positioned to protect your property while respecting the privacy of neighbours, passers-by and guests. I explain the system in English or Dutch and show you how to view live images, play back recordings and switch the alarm on and off. I work in Hersonissos, Heraklion, Malia, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the villages around them.

Security systems I install

IP cameras with app access

Sharp images on your phone, live or recorded, from wherever you are, as long as the property has internet.

Outdoor cameras with night vision

Weatherproof cameras for entrances, driveways and gardens, with infrared or colour night vision.

Wireless and wired alarms

A siren, a control panel and alerts on your phone, wired in new builds and wireless where you do not want to open walls.

Door, window and motion sensors

Sensors on doors and windows and motion detectors inside, so you know immediately when something happens.

Video doorbells and smart locks

See who is at the door and let a cleaner or guest in remotely. Works well with smart home control.

Recorders and cloud storage

A recorder (NVR) in a hidden, safe spot keeps footage locally, with cloud backup as an option.

Cameras, alarm or both: what to choose

Where to place security cameras around a Cretan home

Good placement matters more than the number of cameras. I usually start with these points and adapt them to your property:

  • The main entrance and the gate, at face height and not straight into the sun
  • Terrace doors and large sliding windows, the most common way in
  • The driveway or parking spot
  • Side paths and the back of the house, often hidden from neighbours
  • The pool area and garden, covering your own property only

Privacy, guests and neighbours

Cameras must protect your property without filming places they should not. Indoor cameras in rooms used by guests are never acceptable. Outdoor cameras at entrances are common, but you should tell guests about them in your listing and house rules. I aim cameras at your own property, not at the street, the neighbour's garden or the beach path, and I can mask parts of the image if needed.

For permanent residents I often combine a few outdoor cameras with an alarm that you only switch on at night or when you go out. For holiday homes the alarm is usually on whenever nobody is there, and a property maintenance visit can follow up any alert.

Power cuts, internet and the Cretan climate

Short power cuts and unstable internet happen, especially in villages and during storms. A good system keeps working in those moments:

Power and network

  • Local recording that continues without internet
  • A small UPS to bridge short power cuts
  • Alarm panel with backup battery
  • Alert when the connection returns

Sun, salt and dust

  • Outdoor-rated cameras and housings
  • UV-resistant cables and conduits
  • Sealed connections near the sea
  • Easy access for cleaning the lenses

If your fuse box is old or the circuit trips often, I fix that first with an electrical repair, so your security does not depend on a weak link.

Complete your security: combine it with

Outdoor and security lighting

A well-lit entrance and garden deter intruders and give your cameras clearer images. Motion-sensor lights only switch on when needed.

  • Motion-sensor lights at doors and paths
  • Garden and driveway lighting
  • Weatherproof fittings
  • Timers or smart control

Smart home control

Control lights, A/C and the water heater from the same phone you use for your cameras. Leak sensors add protection against water damage.

  • Lights on and off while you are away
  • Remote A/C and boiler control
  • Leak alerts and water shut-off
  • Simple app, explained in English or Dutch

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a CCTV system cost in Crete?

It depends on the number of cameras, the cable runs and whether you add an alarm. A video doorbell with one or two cameras is a small job, a villa with cameras all around and sensors on every door is more work. I give you a free quote and a fixed price before I start.

Can I watch the cameras from abroad?

Yes, every system I install can be viewed on your phone wherever you are, as long as the property has internet. I set up the app with you and test it before I leave.

Are cameras allowed when I have guests in the house?

Indoor cameras in guest areas are not acceptable. Outdoor cameras covering entrances are common, but you should mention them to guests. I advise on sensible placement that protects your property and respects privacy.

Do the cameras record at night?

Yes, the cameras I install have infrared or colour night vision. For dark gardens I can add a motion-sensor light, which also helps deter intruders.

What happens if the power or internet goes down?

Most systems keep recording locally and send a notification when the connection returns. A small UPS can keep cameras and the router running during short power cuts, and alarm panels have their own backup battery.

Do I need a monthly subscription?

Not necessarily. Most systems work with a free app and record on a local recorder. Cloud storage is optional, useful if you want a copy of footage off the property.

Wired or wireless cameras: which is better?

Wired cameras are the most reliable and do not need battery changes, which makes them ideal for new builds and renovations. Wireless cameras are easier to add to an existing home without opening walls.

Do you install alarms and cameras in Malia, Agios Nikolaos and Elounda?

Yes. I am based in Hersonissos and install security systems in Heraklion, Malia, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the villages in between, including for owners who are abroad during the installation.
