Air conditioning, heat pumps and heating in Crete: A/C technician in Hersonissos, Heraklion, Malia and Agios Nikolaos

Crete asks a lot from a climate system. In summer air conditioners run day and night for months, often in rentals where guests set them to the coldest setting and leave the windows open. Near the sea, salt air attacks outdoor units and their coils. In winter the same houses feel surprisingly cold and damp: thick stone walls, tiled floors and little insulation make many homes chilly from December to March, especially in the hills and mountain villages. Mould on walls and a musty smell in a closed holiday home are common too.

I am Gino, a Belgian-certified HVAC technician, plumber and electrician with more than 20 years of experience, based in Hersonissos. That combination is a real advantage in heating and cooling. An air conditioner needs a proper electrical circuit and a condensate drain, a heat pump or central heating system needs plumbing, controls and safe wiring. I install, service and repair the whole system myself, from A/C installation and A/C repair to heat pumps, underfloor heating, pellet and oil boilers and ventilation against damp.

I work in Hersonissos, Malia, Stalis, Analipsi, Gouves, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the villages around them. An A/C that fails in a heatwave or heating that stops in a cold spell is urgent, especially with guests or elderly people in the house, and I treat it that way. New installations and seasonal service we plan ahead, ideally in spring and autumn, before the busy weeks. You always get a fixed price before I start.

Heating and cooling problems I solve in Crete

A/C that no longer cools

Dirty filters and coils, a blocked outdoor unit, a failing fan or an electrical fault. I clean, test and repair so the unit cools properly again.

Leaking or dripping units

A blocked condensate drain or a badly sloped pipe makes water run down the wall. I clear and reroute it so it stays dry.

Bad smells from the A/C

Mould and dirt in the indoor unit cause a musty smell, especially after a winter of standing still. A thorough cleaning solves it.

Cold, damp houses in winter

Stone walls and tiled floors stay cold. A reversible heat pump, underfloor heating or a pellet stove makes winters comfortable.

Boilers that stop working

Oil, pellet and gas boilers that will not start, lose pressure or make noise. I service and repair the burner, pump and controls.

Mould and condensation

Closed holiday homes and bathrooms without airflow grow mould. I install ventilation and damp solutions that keep air fresh.

A rough guide to the systems I install most. I always look at your house, how you use it and the space available before I advise.

Why service matters so much in the Cretan climate

A climate system in Crete works harder than in most of Europe. Regular service saves energy, prevents breakdowns in the hottest week of the year and keeps the air healthy. This is what I check:

  • Filters, coils and fan of the indoor unit, cleaned and disinfected
  • The outdoor unit, cleared of dust, salt deposits and leaves
  • The condensate drain, so no water runs down walls
  • Electrical connections and the circuit, for safe operation
  • Pressure, pump and burner of heating boilers before the winter
  • Thermostats and controls, so the system only runs when needed

Cooling only, or heating too?

Many people in Crete think of air conditioning only for summer, but a modern reversible unit or heat pump also heats efficiently in winter. Which system fits depends on how you use the house.

Mainly a summer home

  • Split A/C units in bedrooms and living room
  • Good cleaning before the season
  • Ventilation against damp while closed

Lived in all year

  • Air-to-water heat pump with radiators or floor heating
  • Or a pellet stove in a mountain village
  • Reliable hot water from the same system

I come to look, listen to how you live and give you an honest proposal with a fixed price.

One technician for climate, plumbing and electrics

Heating and cooling jobs are rarely only HVAC. A new A/C needs its own protected circuit and a drain that ends somewhere sensible. A heat pump connects to pipes, radiators, a water heater and the fuse box. A pellet boiler needs a flue, pipes and controls. With separate trades this means several visits and a lot of coordination.

Because I am certified for all three, I plan the whole installation, connect it and test it as one system. For owners abroad and rental managers I also offer seasonal service: I clean all units before the summer, check the heating before the winter and send you a short report with photos. Combined with my property maintenance, your house is ready for every season.

Often combined with heating and cooling

Fuse box upgrade

Several A/C units and a heat pump need capacity and proper protection. An upgraded board stops the breakers tripping on the hottest days.

  • Dedicated circuits for each unit
  • Modern residual current protection
  • No more tripping in summer
  • Clearly labelled circuits

Solar water heater

Free hot water from the sun for most of the year, with an electric back-up for winter. A smart addition when you renew your heating.

  • Less electricity for hot water
  • Fixed packages on the service page
  • Descaling and repairs too
  • Plumbing and electrics in one visit

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can an A/C technician come in Hersonissos or Heraklion?

I live in Hersonissos, so Hersonissos, Malia, Stalis and Analipsi are quickest. Heraklion is about 30 minutes away, Agios Nikolaos about 40 and Elounda about 50. In a heatwave or a cold spell I prioritise breakdowns, especially with guests or vulnerable people in the house.

How often should an air conditioner be serviced in Crete?

At least once a year, before the summer. Units in holiday rentals or close to the sea often need a cleaning twice a year, because they run so much and salt and dust build up on the coils.

Why does my A/C smell bad when I switch it on?

Usually because of mould and dirt in the indoor unit after weeks of standing still. A thorough cleaning and disinfection of filters, coil and fan solves it. If the smell comes back quickly, the condensate drain may be blocked.

Can my air conditioner also heat the house in winter?

Most modern split units are reversible and heat efficiently in the mild Cretan winter. For a house that is lived in all year, an air-to-water heat pump with radiators or underfloor heating is often more comfortable.

What is the best heating for a stone house in the mountains?

It depends on the house, but a pellet stove or pellet boiler is often a good fit in colder villages, sometimes combined with a heat pump. I look at the space, the existing pipes and how often you are there before I advise.

How much does a new A/C or heat pump cost?

It depends on the size of the rooms, the type of system and the installation spot. I come to look or check your photos, and you get a fixed price before I start. Some products have fixed packages on their own service page.

Do you top up refrigerant?

No. A unit that is low on refrigerant has a leak, and topping it up only hides the problem for a while. I find the cause, repair the unit where it makes sense, or advise on replacement.

Can you prepare my holiday home for winter and summer?

Yes. Before the summer I clean and test all A/C units, before the winter I check the heating and ventilation, and I send you a short report with photos while you are abroad.
