Electrician in Crete: electrical repairs, fuse boxes and rewiring in Hersonissos, Heraklion, Malia and beyond

Electrical installations in Crete live a hard life. Many houses were built in stages over decades, with new rooms, extra air conditioners and a pool pump added to a fuse box that was never designed for them. Salt air near the coast corrodes connections, humidity creeps into outdoor sockets and junction boxes, summer storms bring power cuts and surges, and in older homes the wiring often has no proper earth or residual current protection. The result: breakers that trip, sockets that stop working, flickering lights and, in the worst case, a real fire or shock risk.

I am Gino, a Belgian-certified electrician with more than 20 years of experience, based in Hersonissos. I also work as a plumber and HVAC technician, which matters more than you might think: water heaters, pumps, air conditioners and heat pumps are where plumbing and electricity meet, and where many faults start. I trace the cause instead of just resetting a breaker, explain what I find in plain English and give you a fixed price before I start the repair.

I work as an electrician in Hersonissos, Malia, Stalis, Analipsi, Gouves, Heraklion, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the villages around them. A total power loss, sparks or a burning smell is an emergency, and I come out 24/7. Upgrades like a new fuse box, outdoor lighting or an EV charger we plan together, also when you are abroad and I work with your keys.

Electrical problems I see every week

Tripping breakers

A breaker or residual current device that keeps tripping usually points to moisture, a faulty appliance or an overloaded circuit. I test circuit by circuit until I find it.

Dead sockets and switches

Loose connections, burnt contacts and corroded terminals are common near the sea. I repair or replace them and check the circuit behind them.

Overloaded fuse boxes

Old boards were not made for several A/C units, a water heater and a pool pump. A fuse box upgrade adds safe circuits and modern protection.

Old wiring

Cloth-insulated cables, no earth and junctions buried in walls. When repairs no longer make sense, I plan a partial or full rewiring.

Lighting that fails outdoors

Garden, terrace and pool lights suffer from sun, salt and water. I install fittings and connections that are made for outdoor use.

Security and smart control

Cameras, alarms and smart switches let owners abroad keep an eye on their home and control A/C and lights remotely.

Electrical warning signs and how urgent they are

Use this as a quick guide. When in doubt, switch off the circuit and call me.

SignWhat it can meanHow urgent
Burning smell, sparks or a hot socketA loose or overheated connection that can start a fireEmergency: switch off the main switch and call right away
Residual current device trips when it rainsMoisture in an outdoor socket, light or junction boxSoon: leave that circuit off until it is checked
Breaker trips when the A/C or heater startsAn overloaded circuit or a fault in the applianceSoon: avoid running large appliances together

Why electrical faults are so common in Cretan homes

When I trace a fault, it often comes back to one of these local conditions:

  • Salt air on the coast that corrodes terminals, breakers and outdoor fittings
  • Humidity and winter rain getting into badly sealed outdoor boxes
  • Extensions and extra A/C units connected to circuits that were already full
  • Older wiring without a reliable earth connection
  • Power cuts and surges during storms that damage sensitive equipment
  • DIY connections from previous owners hidden behind ceilings and walls

Repair, upgrade or rewire?

Not every fault means a new installation. I always start by finding the actual cause and repairing what can be repaired safely. A single corroded socket or a faulty appliance is a quick fix.

A repair is enough when

  • The fault is in one socket, light or appliance
  • The fuse box has modern protection
  • Cables are in good condition

Time to upgrade when

  • Breakers trip on normal use
  • There is no residual current protection
  • Cables are brittle or have no earth

If an upgrade makes sense, I explain why, what it involves and what it costs before you decide. Rewiring can often be done room by room.

An electrician who also understands water and climate systems

Many electrical calls are really about something else: a water heater element that leaks current, a pressure pump with a failing switch, an air conditioner that trips the board in August. Because I am also a certified plumber and HVAC technician, I can follow the fault from the fuse box to the appliance and solve it in one visit.

The same goes for new projects. When you install solar panels, an EV charger or a heat pump, I check the capacity of your supply and fuse box first, so the new system works safely from day one. For owners abroad I send photos of the board before and after, with each circuit labelled clearly.

Often combined with electrical work

A/C installation and service

A new air conditioner needs a correctly sized circuit, and an existing one that trips the power often needs service. I handle both the electrics and the unit.

  • Dedicated, protected circuit
  • Correct cable size for the unit
  • Installation and cleaning
  • One tradesman, one visit

Electric water heaters

A leaking element is one of the most common reasons for tripping. I replace the element or the whole heater and connect it safely.

  • Element and thermostat replacement
  • Safe connection and earth check
  • Fixed packages for new heaters
  • Plumbing and electrics together

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can an electrician come in Hersonissos or Malia?

I am based in Hersonissos and Malia is about 10 minutes away, so these areas are the fastest. Heraklion is about 30 minutes, Agios Nikolaos about 40. For a total power loss, sparks or a burning smell I come out 24/7.

Why does my residual current device keep tripping?

Usually because of moisture in an outdoor socket or light, a faulty appliance like a water heater element, or damaged insulation somewhere in a circuit. I disconnect and test circuit by circuit to find the cause instead of just resetting it.

How much does an electrician cost in Crete?

Every job is different, so I give you a free quote and a fixed price before I start. For small faults I can often tell you the price after a short look or a few clear photos.

Do I need a new fuse box?

Not always. If your board has no residual current protection, uses old screw fuses or trips with normal use, an upgrade is wise. If it is modern and in good condition, a repair or one extra circuit may be enough.

Can you add a circuit for a new air conditioner or water heater?

Yes. Large appliances should have their own protected circuit. I check the capacity of your supply and board, run the cable and connect the appliance, so you do not overload existing sockets.

My lights flicker. Is that dangerous?

It can be. Flickering often comes from a loose connection that heats up over time. If it happens in one light, it may be the fitting. If several rooms flicker, call me to check the board and main connections.

Do you work in old village houses with old wiring?

Yes. Older stone houses often have cables without earth and junctions hidden in walls. I assess what is safe, repair what can be repaired and plan a step by step rewiring where needed.

Can you check the electrics of my holiday rental before the season?

Yes. I test the residual current devices, check sockets and outdoor lights, look at the board for heat or corrosion and send you a short report with photos, so your guests have a safe stay.
